New $700 Optimus Prime Transformers toy walks and transforms on its own

The “robots in disguise” are starting to flaunt their skills.

On Friday, Hasbro announced a new partnership with Robosen Robotics (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd, a company specializing in programmable robots, to bring a fully operational Transformer to life. Unlike your typical Transformer, Optimus Prime Auto-Converting Programmable Advanced Robot, revealed at this week’s Hasbro Pulse Fan Fest, will be capable of transforming on its own with the press of a button.

This is not Robosen Robotics’ first Transformers-esque robo-build. The team spent nearly 11 years working on robots with a construction similar to bots that populate the cartoon/toy franchise. Here’s a video:

But now Optimus is getting the treatment. The new toy features “a comprehensive set of functions, including automatic convertible movement from vehicle to robot, bipedal walking ability in robot form, race function in vehicle form, programmable/code development, and robot control/commands by either voice or via mobile app,” Hasbro said in a news release.

“We are equally excited about this collaboration! In our continued persistence to elevate branded play, Robosen’s advanced innovation within robotics, will allow our fans to bring their favorite Transformers characters to life in a way never achieved before within collectibles”, said Casey Collins, general manager and senior VP at Hasbro, in the release.

The new Optimus is currently available for pre-order at Hasbro Plus.
