Coaches Vic Schaefer and Dawn Staley met in Dallas four years ago for national championship in women basketball. The rivals, with Schaefer guiding a another team now, will have a face off yet again on Tuesday, this time to win a spot in Women’s Final Four.
Currently, South Carolina takes number 6 Texas in one match that the two coaches know wouldn’t be very similar. Both played with each other fifteen times while Schaefer was the coach at the Mississippi State. Meanwhile, Staley has remained in South Carolina since the year 2008-09.
Her team Gamecocks stood at 12-3 in these meetings, which includes winning 2017 NCAA championship match as well as the SEC tournament finals of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Schaefer’s winnings against Staley were in regular season.
Schaefer team said that there is a powerful mutual respect between him and Staley, despite their competition on court as well as in recruiting.
Both the coaches completely transformed the SEC teams they coached, leading them to Final Four for first time ever in the program history. Schaefer’s Bulldogs reached 2018 national championship match, falling to Fighting Irish and Staley’s Gamecocks reached 2015 Final Four as well, where they lost to the Notre Dame during national semi-finals.
