Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes on Andy Reid teaching him to change diapers

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ relationship with head coach Andy Reid is already special, the pair having already won a Super Bowl together.

Now, it comes with some fatherly advice.

Mahomes — who in February welcomed his first child, daughter Sterling Skye, with fiancee Brittany Matthews — recently said that Reid is helping him settle into fatherhood with lessons on how to change diapers.

“[Reid] actually is,” Mahomes told “Good Morning Football” host Kay Adams about his coach giving him diaper tips.

“I’ve gotten alright at changing diapers. I’m not the best. I’m not going to lie to everybody,” Mahomes said. “But, I think if you gave me the dummy baby and I could do it on paper, but as far as applying it to a moving baby that’s screaming a little bit, crying a little bit… I crack a little bit under pressure.”

As for the exact advice Reid gave to Mahomes, the quarterback side it’s all about having the right mindset.

“You gotta have the right mentality going in,” Mahomes said. “I think that’s the biggest thing he preaches to me. You gotta have the right mindset going in and know that you might face some adversity when you’re there.”

Reid and his wife Tammy have had five kids together, including Chiefs linebackers coach Britt Reid and the late Garrett Reid, who passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2012 at the age of 29.

Adams, who covered the Chiefs during the preseason, said last month that “it’s so obvious how close” Mahomes and Reids are. She added that the pair clicked ever since they met before the 2017 NFL Draft, where Kansas City selected Mahomes with the 10th pick. She added the relationship has since grown even stronger after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to the Buccaneers in February, a year after the Chiefs won it all.

Mahomes also admitted that he’s surprisingly getting a lot of sleep while parenting a newborn — thanks to his future wife.

“Brittany’s an amazing mom, who’s done great job at helping me out becoming a new dad,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes and Matthews are set to tie the knot sometime in 2022. The star quarterback proposed in September 2020.
