“Educate Myself”: Serena Williams Details How She Drives Against the Odds in Life

Former World No. 1 Serena Williams has reached great heights in the sport. She began her career as a teenager and continues to dominate the game today, even entering motherhood. During this period, the American athlete has won many honors and is the proud winner of 23 Grand Slam titles.

Recently, Serena Williams spoke about how she copes with the different ventures she engages in. Before engaging in new activities, the American superstar has a habit of acquiring knowledge on that particular subject. She compares this to the tests she did as a youngster in school.

Elaborating on this, the former Grand Slam winner added, “One thing I’ve done a lot lately is to educate myself. So whether it’s being a new mom or starting a new business, I think of it as a test… when we were younger you would prepare for that test and when you got there you were like okay, I know the answer to that one… But when you’re not prepared, you’re just a little bit more nervous.”

Williams maintains this approach in her personal life as well. Even in her business ventures, she prefers being prepared and having a rough understanding of the subject matter.

The 39-year-old further added, “So that’s kind of how I approach life as well. It’s like becoming a mom and just educating myself, and I may not have the same experiences of all the things I read… But at least I know what to expect or what is coming, and I know how to feel. It’s the same with business, I get great mentors, I talk to a lot of people that have done it and have been incredibly successful at it, and it’s also important to talk to people who have made a lot of mistakes so you can learn from that as well.”
