Jeff Daniels Returning to Broadway in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’

Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird” will resume performances on Broadway on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at the Shubert Theatre with Jeff Daniels reprising his role as Atticus Finch.

“Over the course of the original year-long run, I felt a nightly privilege playing Atticus Finch,” Daniels said. “At this moment in our country’s history, I’m honored to play him again, to inhabit an iconic American hero who still speaks to our times and will help us all remember who we can be.”

One name that won’t be found in the credits for the show is that of Scott Rudin. The superstar producer stepped down from the production in the wake of reports of his abusive and bullying behavior with employees. The production stated that Orin Wolf, the producer of “The Band’s Visit,” has been named executive producer of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and will lead the show’s new management team. Rudin’s fingerprints were all over the initial, blockbuster production — he fought the legal battles that surrounded the rights to Harper Lee’s novel and helped line up Daniels, as well as his replacement, Ed Harris. Media mogul Barry Diller will oversee the production’s financing.

In addition to Daniels, Celia Keenan-Bolger will return in her Tony Award-winning performance as Scout Finch. The show is the highest-grossing play in Broadway history, amassing a total gross of more than $125 million. Like the rest of Broadway, it hasn’t been performed for over a year in the wake of COVID shutdowns.

In a statement, Aaron Sorkin said, “We’ve been waiting more than a year for ‘Mockingbird’ — and all of Broadway — to come back, so this is a very happy announcement. I’m looking forward to the re-launch of the play under Orin Wolf’s leadership and I’m excited for the electricity that Jeff, Celia and the whole cast will be bringing to the Shubert Theatre. Mostly I’m looking forward to being back in our rehearsal room.”
